Food allergies and dietary requirements

On our school camps, the allergen-free menu matches the standard menu dish for dish. A student with allergies eats the same meal as everyone else, made safely, rather than a substitute on a different plate. We built it that way for two reasons: to keep them safe, and so they aren’t singled out. Our own chef and kitchen team prepare it on site, and it costs nothing extra.

Allergen-free menu

What the allergen-free menu is free from

Nuts, gluten, wheat, egg, dairy, soy, sesame and shellfish.

We’re not a nut-free kitchen. A few products on our standard menu carry “may contain nuts” labels. The allergen-free menu itself is free from nuts.

How we keep allergen-free meals separate

  • Allergen-free meals are prepared first, on a separate, sanitised bench.
  • They’re cooked with their own red pots, pans and utensils, and stored in red containers.
  • They’re served on red plates and bowls with red cutlery, and labelled “Allergy-free”.
  • The allergy cupboard, which holds the red equipment, is kept locked when it isn’t in use.
  • Students on the allergen-free menu are served first at every meal, including morning and afternoon tea out on activities.

Being called up first is a safety step, so the right meal reaches the right student before anyone else is served. It means a minute at the front of the queue — then they eat the same food as everyone else.

Menus

Who eats from which menu

  • One allergy: the student eats the standard meal whenever it doesn’t contain their allergen, and the allergen-free version when it does.
  • Two or more allergies: the student eats from the allergen-free menu for the whole camp.
Other diets

Vegetarian, vegan and halal

We have vegetarian and vegan menus, and we cater for halal with halal meat. Like allergies, these need to be listed before camp so the kitchen can plan for them.

Something not on our menus? Requirements such as fructose intolerance are handled case by case. We’ll work with the teachers and parents, and if we can cater for it, we will. If we can’t, we’ll ask the student to bring some food along. Every menu has a matching products list with photos, so parents can check labels at home.

For teachers

What we need from your school

  1. At least four weeks before camp: let us know your estimated numbers.
  2. At least two weeks before camp: confirm final numbers and room allocations, and enter every student’s allergy and dietary information in the online portal.
  3. For any student with an allergy: send us a copy of their ASCIA action plan before camp.
  4. Appoint a Dietary Coordinator: a teacher who is on camp the whole time, confirms the allergy details with our kitchen at check-in, and makes sure each student gets the meal prepared for them — including out on activities.
  5. EpiPens: a student with anaphylaxis carries their own EpiPen, or it stays with a teacher who is always with that student.

If a teacher wants to give a student on the allergen-free menu anything from the standard menu, please check with our kitchen first. That decision sits with the teacher.
